Mission Statement

The Department of Religion is a part of the humanities constituency of the College of Liberal Arts of Wright State University. As a department of religion at a public state university, we respect in the classroom the constitutional separation of church and state. Our primary mission is to encourage students to understand a broad range of religious phenomena from diverse times and traditions with depth, objectivity, and methodological sophistication. We also aim to foster within both the University community and the greater Miami Valley area reflection on the religious experiences of peoples' past and present in order to promote greater understanding of ourselves and others. Integral to this mission is the research and publication of our faculty; we support sustained scholarly work and encourage its dissemination in the classroom, in learned journals and books, and to the wider public.
