International Studies Program
International Studies majors continue to excel academically. In Spring 2008, 24 of our majors (nearly one-third of all IS majors) were named to the College of Liberal Arts Honor Roll.
An unusually large number of IS majors have studied abroad in the last two years: in Spain (Allison Frey, Mindy Williams), Costa Rica (Vanessa Walton, Megan Uhrig, Emily Neal, Mindy Williams), France (Emily Minch, Vanessa Walton, Lorinda Rausch), China (Zac Hayes, Michael Sullivan, Molly Cochran, Jason Jacomet), Egypt (Helena Traner), Japan (Luke Houghton, Megan Uhrig, Ashley Ten Eyck), Germany (Byron Branch, Deb Danner, Adrienne Scott), and the Czech Republic (Ryan Burns).
In 2008, IS major Helena Traner was sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to study Arabic in Cairo.
IS graduate Zeeshan Esack (2007) spent a year in Toronto volunteering at the Canadian Center for Victims of Torture and was recently admitted to the University of London Law School.
2007 IS alumnus Dorothy Mayne is currently a Peace Corps volunteer in Madagascar.
Zhaleh Freels, who is planning a March 2009 graduation, is working in a co-op position as a program manager trainee supporting foreign military sales at Wright Patterson Air Force Base.
IS majors interned in a variety of agencies and organizations in 2008. Tina Konjic and Sara Valek worked for Catholic Social Services, to assist with refugee resettlement in Dayton. Luke Houghton, Mary Krumwiede and Jessica Schaefer interned for the McCain campaign, and Carl Weitz continues as an intern for the Strive Organization’s Knowledge Works Foundation, a literacy program, in Cincinnati.
